August Meridian Long Distance Race on the Oreti
The August Meridian Oreti River Long Distance race was held on Sunday. Entrees were down slightly with some people having rugby trials - Kapa Haka- Skiing trials -- and illness took a chunk of people out, plus the weather possibly deterred a few more. There were 27 competitors across 7 boats
Getting to the start line was harder than it was racing home, due to a strong outgoing tide with a slight cold cross wind and skiffs of rain thrown in.
The rewards at the end were welcomed-- Hot pumpkin and swede soup, along with cheese rolls and savouries and a blazing wood burner. Award winners received Crunchie Bars with Awhina awarded a gold cup to go with her Crunchie Bar for overshooting the race line by a couple of kilometers.
Thanks to all the officials; Dave - Danny - Russell -Julie -Craig and Suzanne
